Celebrating 20 years of Save the Dogs – the stories of those who have always stood at our side

A tale of hope and gratitude: the story of Eva, Sara, and Elia

The Save the Dogs Foundation has been saving lives for two whole decades, but this journey is not one that has been taken alone. Over the years, many people have chosen to stand by our side in different ways by adopting pets, making donations, supporting our initiatives, and, like Eva, making lasting gestures of love that will continue to make a difference well into the future.

Eva’s adventures with us began back in 2005. After the loss of their beloved dog, she and her husband decided to travel to Romania with a camper van packed to the gunwales with dog food. They had heard about Sara Turetta, a passionate young woman who was doing everything she could to give abandoned dogs a future. They drove all the way to Cernavoda, where they were similarly shocked by the sight of so many starving and malnourished stray dogs roaming about, while the local population remained indifferent to their suffering.

Eva and her husband met Sara and Elia —two dogs that had been saved from living in harsh conditions: Sara, a young dog rescued from the streets, and Elia, a Pinscher mix abandoned by his owner in Bucharest. Without any hesitation, they decided to welcome both dogs into their family.

Eva, Sara and Elia

This experience changed their lives forever. Elia was at their side for 15 years, while Sara lived with them until recently, for almost 20 years. They experienced both joyful and challenging moments together, which were consistently filled with love and optimism.

Burying Sara next to Elia in our garden left me with a profound sense of gratitude towards Save the Dogs. For this reason, I have included a life insurance policy in my will for the association, to express my eternal gratitude and help other animals in need. Sara and Elia will forever remain in our hearts.” – Eva
