Story of the Month: Evren

Evren was severely underweight and infested with fleas and ticks when he arrived at our shelter, but he is responding very well to the care we are providing.

When we lifted Evren up as we were transporting him to the clinic, we realized he was much lighter than he appeared. As we gently gave him a thorough clean, the reason for this became all too apparent: hidden beneath a mass of fur, tangles, and knots was a severely malnourished dog covered from head to toe in fleas and ticks.

We started his treatment, and as he gradually recovered he was almost unrecognizable.

Evren’s early days at our shelter

When we first admitted Evren, he was in a piteous condition – severly underweight and infested with parasites. His fur was so matted and tangled with foreign objects that we had to shave it all off to remove them.

As we removed his fur, it became clear just how thin he was and how many parasites he was carrying. Subsequent tests revealed what we had already suspected, as he tested positive for three serious diseases linked to their presence.

Evren is only two years old, and was found in a slum area of one of the poorest neighborhoods in Cernavoda; it appeared that he had no one looking after him, and no one knows how he ended up there.

Once his fur had been removed, he was transformed

The first major transformation occurred the day we shaved off all his fur. After covering him up and moving him to the quarantine area of our clinic, he began to relax and let us gently pat him on the face.

In the days that followed, we started his treatment, and as soon as he was stable enough, we sterilized him, which is the protocol we follow for all animals entering the shelter.

Gradually, he began to relax and feel more comfortable with us, seeking out our company. Most importantly, he started to gain weight, his fur started to grow back, and the treatments began to take effect.

Then the moment we had been waiting for finally arrived.

Evren’s first experience in the playground

When he was ready, we took Evren for his first walk in the grounds of our shelter.

It was an important moment for us, not only because it meant his health was improving, but also due to the initiative he was showing. If you had seen the condition in which we found him, you would know exactly what this meant for us.

His physical improvement is just one part of our approach; ensuring that every animal heals psychologically is equally important to us.

Within just a few weeks at our shelter, Evren has developed a strong trust in people, seeking contact  with them and guidance from them. Despite everything that has happened, he approaches every activity we introduce with curiosity and a strong desire to learn.

Learning to walk on a leash

We are teaching Evren how to walk on a leash. Initially, he was a bit suspicious of this unfamiliar object, but his curiosity soon took over. As soon as he stepped outside, he was keen to greet everyone he met.

He walks confidently with his head held high, excitedly exploring the different areas of the shelter, and we feel immeasurably proud of him.

Right now, however, our main priority is to ensure he makes a full recovery and heals from the three illnesses he is battling, as there is still a long way to go.

We can see a huge potential in him, and we are committed to making sure he has everything he needs to get completely back on his feet and thrive.
