On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Save the Dogs has released the third edition of the “Friends on the Streets, Companions for Life” reportOn the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Save the Dogs has released the third edition of the “Friends on the Streets, Companions for Life” report, which focuses on providing support for homeless or low-income individuals in Milan living with their animals. The report outlines the growth of the project and provides an in-depth analysis of the phenomenon, showing the significant increase in the number of couples assisted (i.e. people accompanied by one or more pets): 124 in 2023 (+163.8% compared to 2022), projected to rise to 191 in 2024, with 274 animals receiving support.
The targeted areas for intervention include Lambrate, San Babila, Duomo, Quarto Oggiaro, Arco della Pace, Rogoredo, and a Rom camp in Monte Bisbino. Those assisted often face vulnerable situations such as mental health issues, substance dependencies, and financial hardships, which is why the project focuses on building a trusting relationship by providing veterinary care and sterilizations, particularly for Bull and Molossoid breeds.
Among the objectives and challenges for the coming years are reinforcing our collaboration with institutions (especially with the nine municipalities of Milan) and with other organizations in the third sector, as well as expanding existing services, such as enabling pets to accompany their owners in shelters.
