Micia and the AccogliAmo initiative: concrete help for those living on the streets

In July 2024, Save the Dogs launched the AccogliAmo project, an innovative initiative aimed at providing essential support for the pets of homeless individuals or those facing temporary difficulties in managing their pets.

Thanks to a grant from the Dr. Fulvia Anelli Fund, this project serves as a bridge of solidarity between the Street Unit and the specific needs of people and their animals, providing concrete assistance that supports the special bond they share.

The first case involved Micia, a 6-year-old cat who is deeply loved by her owner, a middle-aged man living in an abandoned farmhouse on the outskirts of Milan. This farmhouse also houses five other cats, two of which have already been sterilized by Save the Dogs.

Micia’s human companion is one of the more than 200 beneficiaries assisted by the Save the Dogs‘ Street Unit, which provides support for marginalized individuals. Back in August, Micia was attacked by a passing dog and sustained a severe back injury. Not knowing where to turn for help, her owner only reached out to us ten days later, thanks to the intervention of an acquaintance.

When the Save the Dogs’s team stepped in, Micia was in a critical condition. She was extremely weak and was suffering from a badly infected wound. She was admitted to the Enpa clinic, where she was treated and her wound was surgically cleaned. However, the poor cat’s hind legs were almost totally paralyzed. Subsequent transfer to a specialized clinic revealed that the infection had reached her spine. Thanks to targeted antibiotic therapy, Micia has made a surprising recovery, and eventually regained her ability to walk, albeit not without some difficulty.

To ensure her complete recovery and monitor her progress after the therapy treatment, Micia was temporarily placed with a foster family, offering her 24-hour care and a safe environment where she could fully heal. She was also sterilized during this time.

By October, Micia had fully recovered and was reunited with her human companion, ready to resume their life together. Micia’s story highlights the significance of the AccogliAmo initiative in offering vital support not only to animals but also to the people who love them, ensuring they receive the help they need when they need it most.

The AccogliAmo initiative was created through a collaboration between Save the Dogs and the Dr. Fulvia Anelli Fund, who jointly launched a crowdfunding campaign on ideaginger.it, a platform that supports cultural, social, and business projects in raising funds.

The first contribution for this project came from Banca Centropadana, which donated 10% of the campaign total (€1,200) to AccogliAmo through their DROP initiative (Donare Risorse Organizzare Progetti or ‘Donate Resources, Organize Projects’). DROP supports non-profit organizations, social enterprises, and start-ups in the realization of their projects through crowdfunding.

Thanks to the generosity of the community and the support of Augusta Anelli, President of the Fund and Fulvia’s sister, the sum of €15,104 has already been raised, which will enable the temporary fostering of pets belonging to homeless people or those facing difficult circumstances over the coming months.
